OLJ – Assessment Item 1

(a) define what social networking is (in your own words);

From my current understanding to date, social networking is the use of an internet platform to connect with other users. It can be used both on a professional and personal basis to connect with likeminded individuals. Facebook, in my opinion, is used more as a social connection to link friends and family together, however, with the rise of groups, it is also a place to connect people of similar interests for example joining a teaching group based in New South Wales. Twitter and LinkedIN provide more opportunities for professional connection linking people from similar industries that might not necessarily know each other. Instagram lies somewhere in between with “A New Class of Influencers” (Ward, 2019) recently in the news for giving teachers a platform to share their professional lives, while most still are using the platform for photo sharing of their daily lives. As with all social media, it is up to the individual to decide how they use and share on each individual platform.

(b) list what social networking technologies and sites you already use (for personal, work and study purposes); and

Currently I actively use facebook, instagram and twitter as my primary forms of social media. My twitter account is a professional account used only to share and retweet educational focused material. Facebook and Instagram are for personal use and are used to connect with friends and share photographs. I do also have a LinkedIN account, however I do not actively use it.

(c) describe what you expect to learn from completing INF506.

I chose to study INF506 due to its currency within our digital lives. As my current school setting utilises social media more and more the chance to delve into the intricacies behind it interested me. Additionally, the role of social media policies in our changing world fascinates me as I continue to question the lives social media will play in our students lives as they continue to grow.
