Recently I wrote a blog about using ozobots in literacy. I also recently had a play with Sphero’s with my literacy group and thought I’d share the resources. This lesson was inspired by Peter Abt‘s presentation at EDUtech 2018 about using sight words – you can find that lesson on his website.
The lesson focused on making student connections between rhyming words and ending sounds. Students had looked at a text which had a variety of rhyming words and were also starting to look at poetry during their writing time. The students had to drive their sphero from a set starting point and race to the rhyming word. They worked in pairs and both students were highly engaged!
Purpose:
For students to have more exposure to a range of rhyming words.

EN1-4A – draws on an increasing range of skills and strategies to fluently read, view and comprehend a range of texts on less familiar topics in different media and technologies
- Identify word families and word origins to understand the meaning of unfamiliar words, eg base words, rhyming words and synonyms
Learning Intention:
I am learning to identify the meaning of unfamiliar words including rhyming words.
Success Criteria:
- I can identify rhyming words
- I can tell a partner why words rhyme.
- I can match a word to a rhyming word.

I printed the words in colour and we had two sessions ready to go. One lesson I used the pink words and called out the purple words and the second lesson I did the alternative. Students could also put rhyming couplets together themselves and use the spheros the next lesson.
